You really can't make a net book more Disney than that Asus did with the Princess Pink Disney Edition of Asus Eee PC,
you almost expect star-dust to fall out of it when you open the lid!
Lets ignore the beautifully designed princess pink swirly case and look at the nuts and bolts of the Disney edition of the Asus Eee PC.
Hardware:
The Intel N270 Atom processor is an extremely popular processor for netbooks, it sports a clock speed of 1.6GHz, with a 533MHz bus and 542Kb of cache, this may not sound powerful when you're hounded with quad core processors and high clock speeds, however this is is a netbook, not a desktop replacement, we need a sensible speed processor, which is going to be useful when needed and is not going to chomp the battery life into seconds.
There is 1Gb of DDR2 memory, now seeing the Disney Edition of the Asus Eee PC runs off a modified version of Windows XP, this is fine, its only when you're dealing with Vista, then you really do need 2Gb or preferable 4Gb of memory for it to actually respond in the nears decade.
Connectivity:
It sports wi-fi, 802.11b/g/n, the crucial letters here are b, g and n, these are all the current standards, even at 'b' which is a quoted 11Mbps speed, it still will be faster than most peoples internet connections at home. It has a VGA connector to attaching a larger monitor to it, 2 USB ports, a RJ-45 LAN socket for hard wired networks, headphones and a microphone socket and plus a nice feature of a card reader that reads MMC and SD (SDHC) cards. Oh and did I mention it has a web camera installed too?
Input:
Input is via a touchpad, this touch-pad also supports gestures, which enables kids (as well as adults I hasten to add) to enlarge photo's, scroll the web etc... with simple gestures on the pad. However remembering this netbook has three USB ports, having an external mouse (a pink one of course!) would be more suited for stationary use.
Operating System:
The Disney Netbook runs on a customised Windows XP operating system, remembering that it is targeted at children in the age range of 6 to say 11 or 12, you cannot be fooled by this, its a great piece of kit, but designed with children in mind.
Parental Controls:
As an adult, you're offered up to some 40 parental controls, with white list control for Internet use. The interface is completely controllable by an adult even down to whom they can email.
Review Summary:
The Disney Eee PC is designed to be used by kids, with that in mind, even my little one would most likely be able to fathom one of these out with a little guidance and she is way under 6. The RRP on these is £299.99, however on Amazon you can pick them up for £270 mark. These are not cheap, but then again, not every netbook is born equal and with the Asus Disney Eee PC, you really do expect star dust to fall out of it, they've though of everything! |
